Smile Makeover in Mumbai: Treatments, Steps and Timelines

Smile Makeover & Cosmetic Dentistry

What a smile makeover can include, how digital smile design and a trial smile work, the usual steps and realistic timelines for each treatment.

In brief: A smile makeover is a planned combination of cosmetic and restorative treatments, such as whitening, bonding, veneers, gum contouring, aligners or implants, chosen to improve how your smile looks and works. It starts with a digital smile design so you can preview the result, and it can take anywhere from a few days to over a year depending on what is included.

What a smile makeover can include

There is no fixed package. The treatments are picked to match what bothers you and what your teeth and gums need. Common building blocks are:

  • Teeth whitening to lighten natural tooth colour, usually done first so new restorations can be matched to the whitened shade.
  • Composite bonding to repair small chips, close small gaps or reshape edges in a single visit, with little or no drilling.
  • Porcelain or e.max veneers to change the colour, shape and proportion of front teeth over a longer term.
  • Crowns for teeth that are heavily filled, cracked or root-canal treated, where a veneer would not be strong enough.
  • Gum contouring or crown lengthening to even out an uneven gum line or reduce a gummy smile.
  • Clear aligners or braces to straighten crowded or spaced teeth, often reducing how much tooth has to be prepared for veneers later.
  • Implants or bridges to replace missing teeth.

Matching the treatment to the problem

Smile correction works best when the treatment fits the cause of the concern, so the first question is what exactly is wrong.

Colour

Surface stains from tea, coffee, red wine or tobacco usually respond to cleaning and professional whitening. Stains inside the tooth, such as tetracycline staining, fluorosis or a tooth darkened after a root canal, often do not, and veneers are then the dependable fix.

Shape and proportion

Small chips and minor edge corrections can be done with composite bonding in one visit. Larger changes in length, width or shape, or changes across several teeth that need to match, are better done with ceramic veneers. See our guide to e.max veneers.

Gum line

A gummy smile or uneven gum levels can be reshaped with the Fotona LightWalker laser, usually without stitches. Where bone also has to be reshaped, crown lengthening is used instead. Gum work is done and allowed to settle before veneers are prepared, because veneer edges are designed to the final gum line.

Alignment

Veneers change how teeth look, not where they sit. They can disguise minor irregularities, but moderate crowding or spacing is better corrected with aligners or braces first.

Digital smile design and the trial smile

Planning begins with photos, video and a digital scan of your teeth. The dentist studies how your teeth relate to your lips, face and gum line, then designs the new tooth shapes on screen.

The design can be turned into a mock-up: tooth-coloured material placed temporarily over your teeth so you can see and feel the proposed shapes in your own mouth before anything is permanent. Changes to length, width and shape are easiest to make at this stage, and you decide how subtle or how noticeable the change should be. Read more in our guide to digital smile design.

Step by step

  1. Consultation and examination: discussion of your goals, full check of teeth, gums and bite, X-rays where needed, photos and a scan. You receive a treatment plan and cost estimate. No treatment is done at this visit unless something urgent is found.
  2. Health first: decay, gum disease or infection is treated before any cosmetic work. Missing teeth are usually planned for early, as gaps let neighbouring teeth drift.
  3. Design and mock-up: digital smile design and a trial smile for your approval.
  4. Preparatory treatment: orthodontics, whitening or gum reshaping, if planned, with time to heal.
  5. Preparation and temporaries: for veneers, teeth are prepared to the approved design and temporary veneers copying the mock-up are fitted. Wearing them for about 5 to 7 days lets you test the look, speech and bite.
  6. Final restorations: bonding, veneers or crowns are made and fitted. Dazzle has an in-house digital lab, so the ceramic work is made on site. Each veneer is tried in with a trial paste before it is bonded.
  7. Review and protection: bite check, polishing, and a night guard if you grind.

How long does it take?

Timelines vary widely with the treatments involved:

  • Whitening alone: one in-clinic session, or one to two weeks with home trays.
  • Composite bonding: often a single visit.
  • Porcelain veneers: usually two visits about 5 to 7 days apart, plus any preparatory work.
  • Gum contouring before veneers: typically adds a few weeks for healing.
  • Aligners or braces first: typically several months to well over a year before the cosmetic phase.
  • Implants: usually a few months for healing before final teeth, unless immediate teeth are suitable for your case.

You do not have to do everything at once. Some patients whiten first, live with the result, then decide on veneers. Patients travelling to Mumbai can often have the planning and veneer stages grouped into a single stay. Discuss your dates at the consultation.

Is it comfortable, and how long does it last?

Most steps are done with local anaesthetic where needed, and whitening and bonding often need none. Some teeth may be sensitive for a few days after preparation or whitening. Anxious patients can ask about sedation.

How long results last depends on the materials chosen, your bite, grinding habits and home care. Ceramic veneers and crowns usually last longer and stain less than composite, while whitening fades gradually and can be topped up. Veneer preparation is irreversible, so a prepared tooth will always need a veneer or crown.

Common questions

How many teeth are usually treated?

Most makeovers focus on the six to ten upper teeth that show when you smile. Not every tooth needs a veneer, and the plan covers only the teeth that need correction.

Are lower teeth included?

The main work is usually on the upper teeth. Lower teeth are included when they show clearly in your smile or affect the bite, often with whitening or bonding rather than veneers.

Who is a good candidate?

Most adults with healthy gums and stable teeth can have some form of makeover. Active gum disease, untreated decay or heavy grinding need managing first. If many teeth are worn, missing or the bite has collapsed, full mouth rehabilitation may suit better. Costs depend entirely on the treatments in your plan; see our fees page and smile makeover cost guide.
