One of the most common sources of confusion about smile makeovers is the question of what is actually included. Unlike implants or root canals — single, defined procedures — a smile makeover is a treatment plan, not a treatment. The specific components depend entirely on your aesthetic goals and clinical presentation.
This article explains each treatment that may form part of a smile makeover, when it is appropriate, and how a properly designed plan integrates these treatments into a coherent, sequenced programme.
The Treatments That May Be Included
1. Dental Veneers
The most frequently used treatment in smile makeovers. Veneers are thin ceramic or composite shells bonded to the front surface of teeth to change their colour, shape, size, and surface texture. They address discolouration that whitening cannot resolve, irregular tooth shapes, minor chips, small gaps, and mild crowding.
Material options: E-max porcelain (15–20 year lifespan, highest aesthetics), zirconia (higher strength, slightly less translucent, appropriate for heavy biters), and composite resin (single appointment, 3–7 year lifespan, minimal or no preparation). 2. Teeth Whitening
For patients whose primary concern is tooth colour — and whose teeth are otherwise well-shaped and well-positioned — professional in-clinic whitening is the first-line treatment. Where veneers are also planned, whitening must be completed first: the veneer shade is then selected to match the whitened natural teeth, ensuring a cohesive result across the whole smile.

3. Gum Contouring (Crown Lengthening)
The gum line is a critically important and frequently overlooked component of smile aesthetics. Even perfect veneers will produce a suboptimal result if the gum margins are uneven, asymmetric, or positioned too low (causing a "gummy smile" appearance). Gum contouring reshapes the soft tissue to create even, symmetrical margins that frame the teeth correctly.

4. Composite Bonding
Where the aesthetic concern is limited — a single chipped tooth, a small gap between two front teeth, or minor surface irregularities — composite bonding provides a conservative, reversible correction without veneer preparation. 5. Orthodontic Alignment
Where cosmetic concerns are primarily driven by tooth position — crowding, spacing, or rotation — clear aligner treatment (or fixed braces) addresses the underlying cause before cosmetic work is placed. Attempting to mask significant misalignment with veneers requires excessive preparation and produces an unstable result. 6. Crown Replacement
Patients with existing crowns that are discoloured, ill-fitting, or aesthetically inconsistent with the planned veneer shade will have those crowns replaced as part of the makeover. What Is Not Included in a Smile Makeover
A smile makeover is cosmetically motivated and assumes structurally sound teeth. It does not include dental implants for missing teeth, treatment of active gum disease, or major bite reconstruction. If any of these are required, the appropriate treatment framework is full mouth rehabilitation, not a smile makeover. The two can be combined — structural work completed first, cosmetic work sequenced after — but the clinical problems must be addressed before the aesthetic work begins.
How a Plan Is Built
A properly planned smile makeover begins with a digital smile design consultation: clinical photographs, digital scans, and facial proportion analysis. From this analysis, a treatment plan is produced that specifies which teeth require treatment, which treatment is appropriate for each, and in what sequence the treatments will be delivered.
